World War Three is Dangerously Close to Reality

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has started. Does anyone now believe it will stop in Ukraine? I don’t. I’d be terrified if I lived in Estonia, Finland, or even Poland. For weeks the situation somewhat paralleled the start of World War I as Russia tried to create a pretext for war. A parallel of World War two followed that as the world’s leaders flocked to Putin to seek appeasement. In the end, that was about as successful as Chamberlin’s “Peace in our time message” after his Munich meeting with Adolf Hitler, and we all know how that worked out.

According to all reports Putin is paranoid, and now surrounds himself like a medieval king with a tiny number of “Yes” men. There is no dissenting voice to be heard, and it takes weeks for any one out his inner circle to secure a meeting with him. Even then, the elaborate security precautions taken, including a disinfectant bath and walking through an ultrasound tunnel before meeting him, seem more like the James Bond villain Blofeld than a head of state. The only thing missing is the cat!

One Mistake is All it takes

All it takes now is one mistake, one tragic accident, and the world will be plunged into a war by another Russian madman capable of anything Stalin ever did. A misguided missile, a downed civilian plane, an unwitting incursion into EU territory by a lost…
