Wayne Gretzky is to Blame — Why the Only Hockey Match I Ever Saw Was My Last!

As you may know, Canadians are hockey crazy. When I do seminars in Canada, and I tell the attendees that that I have only ever watched one hockey match in my life and that I will never go back, the audience generally boos. However, when I tell them the whole story, they usually cheer.

Magic Johnson, Jerry Buss, The Great White Hope, and the GOAT!

In 1985 I moved out to Los Angeles to work as a goffer for a rich guy with whom I was golf buddies. He had started a limo company called Barons of Beverly Hills. It wasn’t going well, and he wanted out of it. Somehow, we were contacted by Jerry Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and the LA Kings, who apparently wanted a limo for his own use. We had a new Lincoln town car, Mahoney stretch limo, and he was willing to trade us a bunch of tickets for two years’ use of the limo. My boss sent me up to talk to him.

When I got to the LA Forum, I had dinner with Jerry Buss and Magic Johnson, on the one side of me, and Jerry Quarry, the boxer known it is his prime as “The Great White Hope” on the other side of me. Mr…
