Ukraine Will Become Europe’s Vietnam
After early Russian advances and a valiant fightback from Ukraine, the war is now at a winter stalemate. With Russia still occupying huge swaths of Ukraine’s territory that it is unwilling to concede. In fact, it is adding massive defensive positions to stop the recapture of any of the stolen territory. Putin also stated this week that he expected the “Special operation” to continue for a very long time.
NATO has been supportive, but the weapons coming into Ukraine have been limited in scope and slow to get there. So it was enough to stop the invasion but not enough to go any further anytime soon. That means the slaughter of almost 150,000 people will continue, along with drastic food shortages in many countries and thousands freezing to death in Europe. Inflation will continue to rise, and growth will slow everywhere until the war is over, which may not be for a decade if Putin lives that long.
If NATO is not willing to up the ante, the war will go on just like the war in Vietnam. Another war that should never have been fought, and when it was, it was not fought to win.
