There were many great and influential Native American chiefs throughout history, and it’s difficult to definitively rank them in any order. However, here are twenty American Indian chiefs who are widely recognized and respected for their leadership and contributions to their respective tribes and the wider Native American community.

1. Sitting Bull (Hunkpapa Lakota): Sitting Bull was a Lakota Sioux chief who fought against U.S. government expansion into Native American territories, including the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Great biography.

2. Geronimo (Chiricahua Apache): Geronimo was an Apache warrior and chief who led resistance against U.S. and Mexican expansion in the late 19th century.

3. Tecumseh (Shawnee): Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief who sought to unite Native American tribes against U.S. expansionism and fought in the War of 1812.

4. Crazy Horse (Oglala Lakota): Crazy Horse was a Lakota Sioux chief who played a major role in the defeat of General Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
