The 10 Best Places Americans Are Retiring Abroad
Porto, Portugal is a beautiful city
While I don’t ever see myself leaving America for good, I have explored numerous destinations where Americans are choosing to retire. Many of these locations offer a lower cost of living, a pleasant climate, rich cultural experiences, and excellent healthcare. For those seeking a change of scenery for three to four months a year — or even permanently — here are the top ten places where Americans are retiring abroad.
1. Portugal
Portugal consistently ranks as one of the best places for retirees due to its affordability, high quality of life, and safety. Cities like Lisbon and Porto are vibrant, but the Algarve region is the real gem for retirees, with its stunning coastline, warm climate, and friendly expat community. Portugal’s Golden Visa program and tax incentives also make it an attractive option.
2. Spain
Spain offers a dynamic mix of Mediterranean charm, world-class healthcare, and a reasonable cost of living. Retirees often flock to cities like Valencia, Seville, and Malaga, where they can enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, delicious cuisine, and a warm climate. Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa makes it easier for retirees to settle here without working. But it’s getting harder.
