Ten Things I Like Better About the USA Than the UK

I am a true Anglo-American. Born in Oxford, Engalnd and living in the UK until I was 18, I feel connected to both countries in equal measure, having spent the other two-thirds of my life in the USA. Although when it comes to the World Cup, it’s England all the way. People often ask which country I like better? I love them both, but the USA is the clear winner for practical matters.

1. Lower Taxes

The UK has the highest income taxes it has had in 50 years, and that’s before you add the 20% VAT, which is a sales tax on just about everything. All things considered, the US taxes its citizens nearly 30% less than the UK. Florida’s sales tax is just 6.5%, and you can still write off mortgage interest on first and second homes.

2. Much Higher Standard of Living

House prices in the UK are insane, and you get very little for your money. In most states, you can get three times the home for the same price you would pay in the UK. For around 200,000 pounds, you’ll get a three-car garage, a pool, and a 3- or 4-bedroom home. That’s northern Florida. Other states are far cheaper. Some, like California or New York, forget.
