In 1989, I was 28 years old and had been in the karate business for just over two years as a full-time school owner. I had just come off my best year ever, having made $128,000 from my 1,248-square-foot location, in Irvine, California.
At the time I was oblivious to what anyone in the industry beyond my small circle of local schools in Orange County were doing. All I knew was that I was making three times or four times what they were.
I didn’t know there were huge schools on the East Coast, martial arts billing companies, and numerous large and powerful sanctioning organizations that offered marketing advice. All I knew was that I was more financially successful at running a martial arts school than anyone I had ever met, so I decided to write a book about how to run a successful school. It was called How to Make $100,000 a Year Teaching Martial Arts .
A year later when I finally published it as a manual in a three-ring binder, I billed myself as the world’s leading expert on how to run a martial arts school.
