10 Things I Like Better About the UK than the USA
My previous post listed things I like better about the USA, but I still love the country of my birth, and go back there each year for several weeks to enjoy things you simply don’t get in the USA.
1. The History
The UK is a tiny island that once ruled two-thirds of the world. From the Tower of London built in 1066 to Edinburgh castle and the Houses of Parliament to St Paul’s Cathedral, the UK has a rich history that cannot be matched in a country barely two hundred years old.
2. Lower Property Taxes
Property taxes are much lower and capped at 3,000 pounds no matter how much your house is worth. Strange but true, you can own a twenty-million-pound townhome in London and still only pay 3,000 pounds a year.
3. The Pubs
American bars even those that call themselves pubs are not really pubs. They don’t have the warmth and ambiance of a traditional British pub. Nor do they have the cask ales, strong ciders, Ploughman’s Lunches, or Steak and kidney pies. There is something special about a traditional pub that just can’t be recreated in the US, even among the many Irish Pubs.
